Day 32
6am Bar Method class. Oh Monday mornings are hard, but at least now its over! My legs were still tired from the weekend, so there were lots of shaking in the class. Anyway, today I want to write about something a bit different. It’s Meatless Monday and I am trying to commit to it. We have been reading lots of things about horse meat mixing into the equation lately, so how about reflecting a bit about our food choices?
I am not a vegetarian. I don’t like eating red meat. Or duck, or rabbit or ham etc.

If anything feels and smells fleshy, I can’t eat it. I used to, don’t give me wrong, I am from Turkey and we like our bbq and kebaps and all the other stuff. I stopped eating red meat when I was around 16 or something. Never craved it afterwards. I wished I was a full vegetarian. I love all animals, and the idea of having meat in my plate feels morally wrong. But I also believe, nature intended certain things in a certain way. There is a life cycle. The problem we are facing right now is that we -as human beings- twisted the way the nature intended us to eat food. We eat connivence now. Especially in the western civilizations.

I didn’t grow up like this. We always had our local farmers coming into our neighborhood, selling their produce that is available at that time of the year, and I looked forward to seeing the apricots or tomatoes to be in season again. We had our butcher and our fisherman for generations. The butcher provided ethical meat to my greatgrandma, and later on his son served my parents needs. I missed that in Canada. Yes, we have the farmers market and yes there are butchers… But it’s all commercial afterall.

So once a week, make a commitment to your food. Make it meatless. You will see how much attention you pay to everything you eat. Consider becoming “part-time” vegetarians. I am going to leave you with this article and there are many more out there if you want to learn a bit more. read here. Just think about it. It’s good for you. And it’s good for the planet.
